Bachelor’s Degree Course presentation

The Bachelor's Degree Course in "Biomedical Laboratory Technologies" was established since the academic year 2002-2003 at the University of Florence and in Figline Valdarno as secondary site. It is one of the Bachelor's Degree Courses for health professions, qualifying as Biomedical Laboratory Techniologist of the health system.

Graduate Biomedical Laboratory Technologists (BLT) are responsible for their working activities; they perform laboratory analyses and research activities in the biomedical and biotechnological field, especially concerning biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, pharmaceutical toxicology, immunology, clinical pathology, hematology, genetics, cytology and histopathology (including autopsy diagnosis techniques), pharmaceutical preparations.

BLT perform their working activities with autonomy, in cooperation with the laboratory management staff in charge of the various responsibilities.
BLT are responsible, in the Biomedical Laboratory, for the performance of analytical procedures applying the working protocols defined by the management; they check the relation between the performances and the indicators and standards defined by the workplace Management; they check and verify the instrument performnces; they take care of routine maintenance resolving any minor inconvenience; they cooperate to the work organization in the structure where they work.

BLT perform their activities in public or private Biomedical Laboratories, according to the Italian current legislation, as employees or freelancers; they cooperate to the education of the support staff and contribute to the upgrading of their professional profile and to research.

Educational Framework

Lectures begin from the first week of October and finish at the end of May. Ttraineeship begins from the second semester of the first year and is organized in three annual courses (Traineeship I, II, III). Students that, at the end of the autumnal session, have not passed the annual traineeship examination are not allowed to attend the traineeship of the following academic year.

Traineeship

Students must attend traineeship as scheduled at the beginning of the academic year. Learning achievement during Traineeship is 60 ECTS credits.
Traineeship activities are performed in small groups of students, every day from Monday to Friday, for six hours per day, from the second semester of the first year, as previously planned.

Traineeship activities are performed in the traineeship settings under the leadership of qualified tutors belonging to the same professional profile. Tutors are selected by a special Committee: they facilitate the learning process of students and allow them to achieve the professional goals as define by law.
Students can make up for traineeship lost hours on Saturday, as previously defined by tutors. Saturday is also dedicated to deeping or research activities about traineeship topics.

The Lecturers Coordinator, in collaboration with the tutors of the various settings. define the traineeship topics and goals reported in the "Traineeship aims" document (pdf).

For evaluation, the students will be required to:

  • perform activities included in the Traineeship Plan ("Piano di Orientamento Formativo", POF) in compliance with the rules and regulations of the workplace;
  • follow tutors istructions and refer to them for every organizational requirement or other occurrences;
  • respect the rules concerning hygiene, health and safety in the workplace;
  • participate to the meetings planned by the tutors to check the progress of the learning project.

Students that regularly attend the planned experiences and receive all positive evaluations by tutors can take the final annual traineeship examination (Traineeship I, II, III).
Students that do not pass the annual traineeship examination are not allowed to attend the traineeship of the next year.

Final examination

Students that have passed all the examinations planned during the Degree Course, including the Traineeship Examinations (I, II, III), are admitted to the final Degree examination.

The final examination of the Bachelor's Degree Course in Biomedical Laboratory Technologies includes:

  • Application Performance to demonstrate knowledge and abilities to manage a proposed professional situation;
  • discussion of a thesis.

The final Degree examination score is based on the weighted average.

Professional opportunities

Graduate students in Biomedical Laboratory Technologies are qualified to practice as Biomedical Laboratory Technologists in accredited biomedical Laboratories of the Health System, including zooprofilactic institutes.

The main professional opportunities are: biomedical and biotechnological analysis laboratories of the public health and private health system (in particular clinical biochemistry, haematology, cytopathology and anatomical pathology, microbiology, immunology, pharmacotoxicology, pharmacology, general analyses); quality controls; research laboratories; industries producing reagents and laboratory diagnostic instruments; pharmaceutical industries; food industries; cosmetic industries; zooprofilactic laboratories.
Employment opportunities after graduation are large and receptivity still looks good.
